This is certainly the most unambitious, vague, and non-suspenseful knock-off of "The Crazies" I have ever seen. A teenage girl is dropped off at her estranged mother's house for Christmas where she immediately catchers her heavily engaged in coitous with some guy. They have a heated argument on the lawn and the daughter storms off to the neighbor's house... Pretty soon after, the army suddenly shows up warning everyone to stay in their homes and lock their doors - making a frightening spectacle out of a crazed, bloody man with a meat cleaver... The mom becomes desperate to get her daughter back as her and the random "fling", who still happens to be in her house, attempt to learn what kind of catastrophe is taking place. Of course, the soldiers are relentlessly trigger-happy, which seems to be the main dilemma keeping the distraught mother from simply crossing the street...
It's not until about an hour into the movie where we come close to finding out what is going on. Early on, it implants a small detail involving a shipping container that washed ashore a nearby beach. The explanation as to it's contents seems to blow by like it doesn't matter! No mention of an infectious outbreak or the possibility of one is ever brought up so I never understood why these Special Forces dickheads were so intent on shooting innocent civilians. The character development was the primary focus and wasn't very interesting. The 'threat' just wasn't as dominant as it should have been and FAR from terrifying...
If you want a similar film that is much better, check out "Right At Your Door" or even "28 Days Later"...
