This is much more in tone of the HERCULES television series than THE SCORPION KING movie, though it fills in the gaps, acting as a prequel to "the Rock's" starring feature. It's one of those period movies in which everyone has a 21st Century attitude and speech patterns.
It's basically a revenge movie, with the young Mathayus (Michael Copon) wanting to kill the despot, Sargon (Randy Couture) who killed his father. Helping him are Layla (Karen David), a love interest, and Ari, a Greek poet. Sargon gets his magical powers from the goddess Astarte (Natalie Becker) and she's as good a villain you'll find in any Sinbad movie.
I can see this as a decent enough direct-to-video series, in the absence of any other sword & sorcery show out there.
Directed by Russell Mulcahy (RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION), who has been on a good role lately.
