As he did in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN (2003) Johnny Depp makes this movie better than it should be. Based on a so-so short by Stephen King, it's about author Mort Rainey who is being stalked by a man (John Turturro) who claims that he was ripped off. He insists Rainey stole his story idea-and changed the ending. He wants the author to acknowledge this, give him the proper credit, and to also reprint the story with the original ending. This all freaks Rainey out, as he knows that he wrote the story years before. Yet the man kills his pet dog, burns down his soon-to-be ex-wife's house, and kills a few of his friends. At first he thinks the person responsible for this is his wife's boyfriend (Timothy Hutton of THE DARK HALF), as there are too many coincidences-but then begins to doubt his own sanity.I saw the 'surprise' end coming a mile away-but Depp's performance is quirky enough that you'll sit and watch it anyways. SECRET WINDOW is among the 75 percent of bad Stephen King adaptations.
