Sub Rosa Studios begins its new line of DVDs with a strong 90's title, SHATTER DEAD. Fans of independent film will instantly know this flick's award-winning reputation, but for the uninitiated, it's a rather original take on the NIGHT OF THE LIVING dead theme of dead people coming back to life and serving a sentence on earth. The eerie twist here is that their souls are trapped inside their bodies and the story focuses on this problem as lead actress Stark Raven makes her way across the wasteland in an attempt to get home. Along the way, she encounters crazy humans and confused zombies...and a wacky individual known as 'The Preacher Man' who is trying to evolve the zombie status into a new order.Twisted, original, and haunting, this is a thinking man's zombie film that's sure to sear one's nerves raw. Decent acting, above-average makeup effects, and solid photography highlight this film and the transfer to DVD is crisp and clear.Extras include THREE commentary tracks, an exhaustive interview with outspoken director Scooter McCrae (who hysterically wears the interviewer out in the segment!), and plenty of raw footage that McCrae narrates. Included are special effects takes, lost scenes, and bloopers. There's also an entertaining piece where you tour the main SHATTER DEAD location. All in all, hours and hours of material for the casual or die-hard fan to peruse. The animated menus and quality of the presentation are top-notch here, outstandingly professional for an independent release.Don't miss this release. And be warned---this movie is not for those under the age of 18. The sex and gore are EXTREME.
