In this made-for-cable thriller, a young Sherlock Holmes (James D'Arcy) confronts the villain Moriarty (Vincent D'Onofrio) and seemingly kills him within the first five minutes. He later discovers that he was set up by the evil genius, who had been wearing a primitive bullet proof vest. Some people associated with the Opium trade are murdered by being injected with a new, more concentrated drug, which is detected by Holmes' new associate, Dr. Watson. He is working as the police's coroner and has a penchant for examining human brains. At first the two men are at odds with each other, but soon become friends as they work on solving the case. Holmes is kidnapped by Moriarty and injected with his new drug creation, heroin, in order to discover what the fatal dosage is. As Holmes is already presented in the movie as over-indulging his vices, tobacco and drink, he's able to tolerate a great deal of the drug until he's able to make his escape. I'm not the biggest Sherlock Holmes fan yet I found this tale entertaining, particularly in how it explains why Holmes and Moriarty are such mortal enemies. It was also interesting to see how he and Watson first met. But the main reason to see this is D'Onofrio's performance as Moriarty-he plays a great, over-the-top villain.
