Lieutenant Chuck Brogan (Shane Rimmer), after working over 20 years for the New York Police, takes a job with the Space Police. He flies a small spaceship and works from a space station in orbit around an alien planet. In the opening scene he's pursuing a fleeing criminal, who crash lands in the city below. He gets out, chases him down an alley, and tells him to come out from behind some garbage cans, demanding he put up all four hands. It's a one-eyed, multi-limbed alien. Gunfire ensues and Brogan is assisted by the cat-like cops (who look like Caitans from STAR TREK THE ANIMATED SERIES). Then, once back at the station, he's called to go to meet with the President, a lizard-like alien who has the mob after him. The main villain, Slob Face, resembles Jabba the Hutt from STAR WARS and his henchman, E. Vile, is skeletal looking and talks like Peter Lorre. There's even a vicious robot attack dog they have named Megabite. All the dialogue and events are a bit over the top and predictable, though a revelation about one of the main characters completely surprised me. I didn't see that coming. Although the special effects don't stand up that well to the test of time, it's cool seeing the combination of live-action, detailed miniatures, puppets and stop-motion animation. I believe this show was the precursor to Gerry Anderson's SPACE PRECINCT (1994), which has a similar tone and effects.
