The myth of La Llorona (The Weeping Woman) is that long ago a woman fell in love with a man-but he didn't want anything to do with her because she had two children. So she kills the children and then tells him that they're gone. He's repulsed and leaves her. She goes even more insane and kills herself. In the present day, in Riverside City, Arizona, the spirit of La Llorona is possessing young mothers and making them kill their children. In comes Dr. Stern, a supernatural investigator with psychic abilities. He figures out what's going on and is determined to stop this evil spirit. It turns out that the wife of a local politician is going to be next and it's a race against time-and the authorities-for him to stop her from killing her son. The way he does this is through 'remote viewing', where he's able to leave his body and go to this other realm of existence (which is portrayed creepily through the video effects).LA LLORONA is an interesting movie in that it tackled a legend I was totally unfamiliar with and presented it in an unconventional way. The character of Dr. Stern is one of the main characters-but he's this rather unlikeable guy who is hard to relate to. It's the other characters, such as Olivia, the first mother who kills her children, I was more drawn to. The acting and production values are solid and the ghost effects aren't overplayed. Written, Directed and produced by Jose Cruz (www.vistacruz.com).
