This third film in the alternate timeline takes place mostly on an alien world, where Kirk and his crew are stranded after the Enterprise is destroyed by a vampire-like alien named Krall (Idris Elba). At first they are separated-Kirk is with Chekov and an injured Spock is with McCoy. Scotty runs into an ally, a warrior woman named Jaylah, who wants to get off the planet. They soon join up and make a plan to escape via an old Federation ship, The Franklin. But not only do they have to find a way off the planet, they have to stop Krall from launching an ancient bioweapon that could decimate the Federation.
BEYOND is a lot like a television episode, though it was extremely predictable and there are way too many cutesy comments, like when KIrk is dictating into his personal journal and complains that the past three years of their five year mission has seemed "too episodic".
I'm a huge Star Trek fan but this was far too tame and boring compared to about every other Star Trek motion picture, including THE FINAL FRONTIER. The CGI effects, of course, happen way too fast, there's too much action and not enough "feel" of Star Trek. For example, when we're introduced to the huge Yorktown Space station on the frontier of the Federation we are shown lots of aliens-but almost all of them are unfamiliar. Where are the Tellarites and Andorians? Overall, this TREK movie was a disappointment.
