Stepford Wives, The (2004)
Movie Review by The Gravedigger

Stepford Wives, The (2004) This 'remake' is much better than I thought it would be, considering all of the bad press & reviews immediately following its theatrical release. So I went in thinking my finger would be glued to the fast-forward button. Surprisingly, this STEPFORD WIVES is an entertaining movie with lots of sarcastic humor. Since everyone has seen the original and its surprise ending in which all the women are being replaced by robot versions of themselves, I think the producers just took it for granted that the audience knew this and went on from there, creating a very different type of movie.Nicole Kidman portrays a top television executive with weird hair who is suddenly fired from her job. She has a bad reaction-and her husband (Mathew Broderick) thinks it's a good idea if they go out an live in the country, in Connecticut. What they experience are neighbors who behave as if it's the 1950's, with Christopher Walken being the guy in charge and Glenn Close as his extremely conservative wife. Kidman meets some of her neighbors and finds it odd that they all act the way they do.She quickly becomes friends with another new neighbor and kindred spirit, Bette Middler, who portrays this quirky writer. When she is changed into one of the 'perfect wives', Kidman takes matters into her own hands and literally turns the tables on the men.The one thing that wasn't quite clear was whether or not the women were robots are not. At one point the procedure is explained-that computer chips are inserted into their brains so they have certain behaviors-yet in another few scenes we see one woman with sparks coming out of her mouth and another who has the ability to dispense cash, like an ATM. Kidman even finds a double of herself, partially constructed. So, are they robots or not? That was really the only thing that bugged me-this inconsistency. Also, it would have been cool if they had a cameo by Katherine Ross, who was the star of the original.Otherwise, if you've enjoyed movies like MEET THE APPLEGATES or KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE, then you should enjoy this comedic horror movie.
