In 1983 two young guys meet on a bus heading out of town. They are both running away from something, though we don't know what. One is very withdrawn, the other outgoing. When the bus breaks down they decide to buy a cheap used car-but a short time later they blow a tire. While the outgoing guy is fixing the tire the other one kicks him into the path of a passing van. The guy driving the van is killed and he finishes off the other guy, who is paralyzed and gurgling blood, with a nearby rock. Skip ahead twenty-years and we find out that the Montreal police are after the same character, who kills guys and then assumes their identity.Angelina Jolie portrays an FBI agent helping them out. Ethan Hawke is a witness to the serial killer's recent murder and it looks like that killer is Keifer Sutherland. But things aren't as they seem. You keep on going back and forth wondering if Hawke is indeed the killer after all-and it's an answer you don't get until 3/4' of the movie. There's a few extremely violent scenes, the foremost being a woman decapitated in an elevator by the killer. And a steamy sex scene involving Jolie and Hawke. TAKING LIVES was really good until the last quarter of the movie, where it veered off into this surreal, implausible 'Hollywood' type ending that just didn't fit with the rest of the movie.
