This takes place after the movie/pilot TARZAN'S RETURN, with Tarzan going back to Africa after spending several years in England. He has a different side-kick than in the first movie, another Native African who was studying in Europe and is returning to his tribe to take over leadership. I'm not sure why they always choose to have a sidekick for Tarzan. With Ron Ely it was that kid, Jai, with other series it was Cheetah or Jane. It's probably because he had a sidekick, N'Kima the monkey, in the books, someone he can talk to as he wouldn't be talking to himself..
A lot of the episodes deal with magic, witches, wizards. There's one that involve a Lost Legion of Rome and another where he visits the Lost City of Opar and meets the priestess La and the half man/half gorilla descendants of Atlantis. An interesting episode has him encountering an older version of himself, from the future, which I thought was cool. One of the worst episodes, however, is when he goes to Amtor (in the ERB books this is Venus) and meets Carson Napier. First, they present this as a planet in a galaxy far away and it's anything not anything like Venus. It is dry and toxic and the mutant looking inhabitants drive around on motorcycles and dune buggies. And Napier himself looks like a nerd and his love-interest Duare anything but a princess of Venus.
The series is the first Tarzan series to be shot in Africa, where it's supposed to take place. I although thought that the ape costumes are great. They look like something between a chimp and a gorilla. Joe Lara (the 18th and 20th person to portray the Ape-man) does make a good Tarzan and the series is second only to the Filmation TARZAN, LORD OF THE JUNGLE, in trying to be faithful to the original Edgar Rice Burroughs novels.
