Produced, written and directed by Brian Pulido, who is probably best known for his comic-books creations EVIL ERNIE and LADY DEATH, THERE'S SOMETHING OUT THERE is about a killer gnome. At the beginning of the short film, Brad brings home the statue of a gnome for their patio garden. His wife Penny doesn't like it at all but agrees to keep it because it will make her husband happy. They aren't happy for very long, though, because that gnome comes alive that night and attacks them. This 16mm is well-produced, directed and the actors well-cast, definitely something worth checking out (see www.theressomethingoutthere.com). There's also no denying that it is heavily influenced by Dan Curtis' TRILOGY OF TERROR short about that Zuni hunting doll that comes to life. In fact, it's so much like that prior story that it works to its disadvantage, coming off more like a lesser remake. There is a comic book that came along with the dvd, BRIAN PULIDO'S KILLER GNOMES. It is the story that is in the dvd, with an additional beginning and ending, which succeeds in giving the story a much wider scope. If these sequences were shot for the movie version it would have made the dvd far more original and lessened the comparisons to the Zuni story.
