First, I liked the remake of William Castle's THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (directed by Bill Malone). It was interesting, fun and scary. This remake of 13 GHOSTS, on the other hand, is just interesting. It's also predictable. A rich guy (F. Murray Abraham) is hunting down and capturing ghosts, for some reason, and some of these ghosts are extremely violent. The rich guy is killed and his fortune and house are left to his nephew, who recently lost his wife in a fire. As it turns out all twelve ghosts that the man captured are imprisoned down in the basement, via containment spells. As soon as the new family moves in (the father, his daughter and son) the house, which is like a glass maze, imprisons them and starts releasing the entities. The special effects are creepy and the ghosts interesting looking, though I would have liked to have known a bit more about their specific backgrounds. And as this is a typical Hollywood movie you know which characters are going to live and which ones will die. If you see this movie and enjoy it you should check out the original--it's far superior.
