In this ferocious new werewolf movie from Germany, Joe Zaso (FIVE DEAD ON THE CRIMSON CANVAS) gives a restrained performance as Alex, a traveller who returns home with the werewolf curse. He first visits his sister, Amy (Raine Brown), who senses that something isn't quite right with her brother. Meanwhile, a pair of amusing werewolf hunters are chasing after another lycanthrope and their pursuit ends up crossing over with the two siblings.
The movie starts off with a bang with a werewolf hunt gone awry in Romania and the gore effects and werewolf makeup are impressively realistic. The canvas is also world-wide in scope, as this werewolf problem is happening all over the place and there are many hunters trying to dispatch them. It's vaguely like JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES, only with werewolves. However, the feel is (and I don't mean this in a bad way) that of THE HOWLING II.
There are also cameos by Judith O'Dea (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) and Mike Mendez (director of GRAVEDANCERS). Also, director Timo Rose is a hoot as one of the werewolf bounty hunters.
BEAST is one of the better werewolf movies I have seen in a long time and would definitely lend itself to the first in a series.
