One of the first theatrical horror films of 2009 seems like a remake of an Asian ghost/revenge movie, which goes to show you how much that sub-genre is starting to influence American films. It's THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE meets THE GRUDGE.
Casey Beldon (Odette Yustman) starts having weird dreams about a creepy blue-eyed boy. She sees dogs with human faces as well. The haunting continues to escalate as she discovers that this has to do with her past. Through some of her mother's notes she finds Sofi Kozma (Jane Alexander), her grandmother, in an old folks home. Sofi explains that this "ghost" is a Dybukk, a entity that wants to be born into this world. It's responsible for Casey's mother killing herself and now it wants Casey. The big "surprise" of why the creature has started haunting her is telegraphed throughout the whole movie so it's anything but a surprise, only a pat ending.
There are a few sequences that made me jump, unsettling effects with upside down heads, and the lead actress is nice to look at though she can't carry the movie.
