"The Untold Story" may be one of the more prominent CAT III films out there and is definitely one of the best. One who is into more underground horror or extreme Asian cinema who has not seen this one has definitely heard about it and let me be another to tell you - it DOES live up to the hype! Anthony Wong ("Ebola Syndrome", "Infernal Affairs") busts out one hell of an awesome performance as the flipped-out, unofficial owner of the Eight Immortals restaurant - known for their delicious BBQ pork buns... The dude's got a hair-trigger temper and, more times than not, resolves issues by murdering people in the workplace; mostly after hours. The aftermath becomes the main ingredient in the afore mentioned pork buns. The film is apparently based on true events that occurred in Macau, a peninsula in southwestern Hong Kong. The actual details in comparison to the film, I am not sure of. "The Untold Story" has it all. It is funny, depressing, disturbing, and nasty - featuring some seriously heinous and unflinching scenes of violence. Namely, the well-known family massacre in which a handful of small children are brutally killed. Crazy stuff all over this one! We've got chopstick rape, urine consumption, dismemberment, rusty spade wrist sawing, and grueling torture. Man, I've never seen one man endure so much damn abuse in one flick! I mean, you almost feel sorry for the guy taking all these police and prison beatings, but when that end scene comes, you remember he is one sick pup. One thing that gets the most complaints is the comedic aspect of the movie - mainly delivered by the group of dimwitted cops who like to give the sole female officer crap for her 'tomboy' appearance and the boss constantly bringing hookers into the station. I was never really bothered by the humor, though it may cause you to take longer to get "into" the film. Once you realize what it's all about, it's MORE THAN engaging. So fans of "extreme" cinema, CAT III films, and/or Anthony Wong should check out "Bunman: The Untold Story". It'll linger with you for a while...
