Warlock (1989)
Movie Review by The Cenobite
11.08.12

Warlock (1989) The late eighties and early 90's what a time for horror there is as much shit as there is classics. Somewhere in between the chaos lies Warlock, completed in 1989 but released in the states in 1991. To this day every time I see a picture of Julian sands I'm instantly taken back to the role that introduced me to him the Warlock. Directed by Steve Miner (House, Halloween h20, Lake Placid) Warlock is the story of a well a warlock who travels to present day to find the grand grimoire or black bible which holds the true name of God. If the name is uttered in reverse all of creation will unravel, fuck this is serious shit here. Along for the time travel is demon hunter Redferne who has made the trip to stop the warlock, and Kassandra (Lori Singer) a girl from present day who joins Redferne. As chessy as the premise is there is a lot of meat in this film for a horror fan to enjoy. As with all Miners movies he understands gore and there is no exception in the Warlock. Lets start with Julian Sands he is a good looking ponytailed britsh man who plays the Warlock and I think hes perfect. There is inept dialogue but Sands seems to have fun with the role he comes off as evil and cheeky. Redferne played by Richard E Grant is the hero who also wears his medieval furs throughout the whole movie while the whole time sporting a mullet. Kassandra (Singer) is the lovable girl from the 90's who is smart yet funny and has a one-liner for every situation their in. Back to what I love gore; the sťance scene not far in when the warlock gets his instructions from a medium who channels satan is amazing. After the medium collapses the warlock casually takes her eyes to lead the way. There is gore and early special effects throughout which help the film keep its nostalgic appeal. Remember sometimes we think we have seen it all in horror and nothing can surprise us anymore. Well in Warlock he kills a kid to boil his fat to make a flying potion BAM!!! Take that Twilight. Watch The Warlock and laugh and enjoy a film that is as fun as it is old...
