'The Legend of Rosasanta'. This is a unique werewolf movie in that it is actually based on historic fact. In 1851 Manuel Blanco Rosasanta was the first serial killer tried in a court of law in Europe. He said the he was a werewolf and had no choice but to kill. The court was convinced that lycanthropy, that he believed he was a wolf, was responsible, and his death sentence was commuted to 'life in prison' by Queen Isabel II of Spain.Julian Sands (NAKED LUNCH, BOXING HELENA, WARLOCK 1 & 2) , like Jack Nicholson, always portrays a realistic crazy person, and gives a good performance as the sociopathic Rosasanta. The special effects, particularly the transformation from wolf to man, is cool, similar to that shown in the movie IN THE COMPANY OF WOLVES. And there are great locations for this period piece film.I think the biggest problem is that the wolves in the surrounding countryside are supposed to be a threat, but these Spanish wolves are much much smaller than their North American counterparts, resembling coyotes in shape and size. It's kind of silly everyone believing these creatures could kill anyone. And although there was the disclaimer that 'No animal was harmed or inconvenienced during the making of this film' it's fairly obvious that they did use some dead animals, such as several finches and a few dogs. Who knows, maybe they were killed before they started shooting the movie, but I doubt it..
