In this BBC series season five consists of five 90 minute movies.
In the fifth season premiere, PRAYER OF THE BONE, Dr.Tony Hill (Robson Green) is invited to Austin, Texas, as an expert witness for a trial. A somewhat dim-witted Iraq war veteran confessed to brutally stabbing his wife and two children but some events don't add up. Tony starts by working with the defense, then is dismissed, then volunteers for the prosecution when he believes the guy is indeed guilty. But one of his sources of information is killed and it looks like someone else may be responsible. This is a good "fish out of water" story and it's interesting to see the character totally on his own, not supported by DI Alex Fielding (Simone Lahbib).
In the THE COLOR OF AMBER, Hill and Fielding are trying to find the killer of an eleven-year old girl. This hits close to Fielding because she has a young son. The police at first thing a local pedophile did the murdert--and it's a surprise who the killer actually is. NOCEBO involves ritualistic killings of two children and it seems as if voodoo is involved. This is one of the creepier episodes and has horror overtones as we see what the victims see, such as a corpse coming out of the ground, a swarm of flies out the mouth of another dead man. NAMES OF ANGELS is a downer as nothing turns out well. They are in search of a serial killer who strangles and rapes women, then dresses them in the former victim's clothing. They figure that he's a member of the business community but he's always one step ahead of them and gets away. I bet he shows up in one of the next seasons. In the last story, ANYTHING YOU CAN DO, there seems to be two killers who are competing against each other and one of them may be Tony Hill's mentor, who is visiting and acting very strangely. This story also tests the relationship between Hill and Fielding, who are developing feelings for one another.
WIRE IN THE BLOOD remains one of my favorite UK series.
